Founded in 1996 by Jared Della Valle and Andrew Bernheimer, Della Valle Bernheimer’s portfolio includes affordable and high-end residential, commercial, hospitality, and public architectural projects, furniture design, architectural design competitions, and art installations.
DB’s work has been featured in numerous publications including the New York Times, ARTFORUM, The Architect’s Newspaper, ARTNews, ID Magazine, Architecture Magazine, Oculus, Metropolis Magazine, Interior Design, Abitare, Boston Magazine, Ottagono, Architectural Review, FRAME, and Competitions Magazine. The principals have lectured at Parsons the New School for Design, the Van Alen Institute in New York City, the San Francisco Institute for Planning and Urban Research, as well as at Washington University in St. Louis, Virginia Tech University, Reed College, Cornell University, Syracuse University, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Della Valle and Bernheimer were the Seinfeld Visiting Critics at the Syracuse University School of Architecture in 2008 and are currently visiting critics of Architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design at Washington University in St. Louis. They have also taught at RISD, Lehigh University, and the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons. Their work is the subject of a monograph published in 2009 by Princeton Architectural Press, entitled “Think/Make”.
The firm’s work has been shown at the Architectural League of New York, Syracuse University, Washington University in St. Louis, the National Building Museum, the Max Protetch Gallery, the Van Alen Institute, and is in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. Their design for the renovation of the Federal Plaza at the US Courthouse in San Francisco won the first San Francisco Prize in Architecture and resulted in their first commission. This project won an annual design award from ID Magazine in 2000 as well as a national citation from the United States General Services Administration’s bi-annual design competition. DB was selected as a winner of the Architectural League of New York’s 2002 Young Architects Forum and was given honors in the projects category by the AIA New York Chapter in their 2002, 2003, and 2007 awards program. They have also won awards from the AIA New York State (2008) and the Boston Society of Architects (2010). DB was selected as a winner of Philbrook Museum of Art’s LANDED Competition in April of 2005 and was named a 2007 Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York.
DB also designed the renovation/restoration of the former home of Paul Rudolph at 23 Beekman Place in NYC, which was selected as an Honor Award winner by the New York City chapter of the AIA. Affordable housing in Brooklyn completed in 2007 through the city’s New Foundations program received a special citation from the NYC AIA, and projects currently in construction and recently completed include two large condominium projects in West Chelsea in New York City. In 2009 DB was selected (in collaboration with ARO) as a winner in Syracuse University’s “From the Ground Up” competition for sustainable, affordable housing for Syracuse’s Near Westside. This house is under construction and won a 2010 Award of Merit from the New York City Chapter of the AIA.
